- A real reason behind the offer
What is it
The brand opens by apologising or admitting a mistake, then reveals that the "fix" is an offer. We priced it too high, we made too many, we forgot to tell you, we sound like we're bragging. It flips the usual confident sales voice into something human and slightly vulnerable, which stops the scroll because brands almost never say sorry. The admission lowers the reader's guard, and by the time the discount appears it feels like making amends rather than selling.
What makes it work
The headline is the apology, nothing else
"WE'RE SORRY." "OUR MISTAKE." "WE'RE SAYING GOODBYE." Large, centred or top-left, often with a single emoji. It should read like a notice, not an ad, so the eye treats it as news before it registers as marketing.
The mistake has to be believable
Priced out loyal customers, overproduced stock, didn't explain a benefit, a sale ending. The more ordinary and specific the mistake, the more human the brand sounds. A dramatic confession that nobody believes reads as a gimmick.
Or make the "mistake" a humblebrag
The self-deprecating variant apologises for something that is actually a strength: "It sounds like we're bragging... ok, fine, we're bragging." That lets you list awards and features without sounding arrogant, because the brand is already laughing at itself.
Tell a tiny story before the offer
One to three short paragraphs of context: the customer who could only afford eight charms, the inventory that piled up. Specific details are what make the apology feel sincere. Then one clear line that turns it: "So here's what we're doing."
The offer is the apology
Discount, bundle, free gifts, guarantee, stated plainly with the numbers visible. A strikethrough price and the new price in the same line is the clearest version. The closing line should tie back to the apology: "That feels like a pretty good apology."
Sign it with a person
"Tristan, founder." "Jake, co-founder." A real first name and role turns a brand notice into a personal note. It's what makes the format feel like it came from someone rather than a marketing team.
The reason and the urgency have to be real
"We can't extend this again," "we haven't sold out yet," "inventory is high" are claims. If the sale gets extended next week or the stock was never limited, it's misleading, and in the EU and Germany that falls under UWG rules on fake scarcity. Strikethrough prices need a genuine previous price, and under the Omnibus rules that's the lowest price of the last 30 days.
