- A real review that reads like a complaint
What is it
A single one-star rating, displayed like a warning, where the "complaint" turns out to be praise: too many compliments, ruined for every other brand, can't stop reordering. The low star count stops the scroll because negative reviews are the thing buyers actually go looking for. The payoff lands a second later, when the reader realises the only problem is that the product is too good.
What makes it work
The one star has to be the first thing seen
One filled star, four empty, large and high in the frame. That visual reads as "bad news" in under a second, and that tension is the hook. Bury the rating under a headline and the format loses its jolt.
The turn has to happen inside the review, not after it
The first line should sound like a genuine complaint: "Warning," "I regret," "stay away." The reveal comes mid-sentence or in the second line. If the reader sees the joke before they read the text, there's no reversal, just a gimmick.
The complaint has to name a real benefit
"Too many compliments on the strap" sells the design. "Ruined for any other soap" sells the quality gap. The joke is the delivery mechanism, but the thing being complained about has to be the actual reason to buy. A funny review with no benefit in it gets a laugh and no clicks.
Use a real review, or make it obviously a gag
This format lives on credibility. The strongest versions lift genuine tongue-in-cheek reviews from your own store, and those exist for almost every brand with any volume. A made-up review styled as a real platform listing, complete with name, review count and date, stops being a joke and becomes a fabricated testimonial. That's a policy problem on Meta and a consumer-law one in most markets, the EU included.
Don't borrow the platform's branding
Suggest a review site with a clean card, star row and action icons. Don't reproduce a specific platform's logo or signature star design. Readers get the reference without it, and the recognisable version implies that platform verified the review.
Frame it once, lightly
A short headline above and a sign-off below ("Read carefully before you buy." / "...proceed with caution") extends the joke without explaining it. More than that and you're telling the reader what's funny.
Product shot does the closing
Once the reader gets the joke, their eye goes looking for the thing being joked about. Put it right there, lit well, either as the background or directly beneath the card.

Using the attached image as the layout reference: keep the full-bleed dark, moody close-up photograph of the product in use filling the frame, heavily darkened toward the bottom for contrast. Keep a large italic serif headline in white across the upper third, and a white rounded-corner review card in the centre with a soft shadow. Inside the card: a circular initial avatar with the reviewer name in bold and a small grey meta line beside it, a thin divider, a row of five square stars with only the first one filled, a relative timestamp aligned right, a bold one-line review title, three short body paragraphs in regular weight, a bold-labelled date line, a thin divider, and a footer row of small grey action icons with labels and a flag icon at the far right. Beneath the card keep a large italic serif sign-off line in white, starting with an ellipsis. Use a generic review-card style with no platform logo. Replace the product with {YOUR PRODUCT}. Set the headline to "{THE WARNING HEADLINE}", the reviewer name and meta line to "{REAL REVIEWER NAME AS PUBLISHED}" and "{THEIR REVIEW COUNT AND LOCATION}", the review title to "{THE COMPLAINT-STYLE TITLE}", the body to "{THE REAL REVIEW TEXT}", the date line to "{DATE OF EXPERIENCE}", and the sign-off to "{THE CLOSING WARNING}".Reference 2 — Quote card above product cutout

Using the attached image as the layout reference: keep the flat solid dark background in a deep tone drawn from the product's colour, a white rounded-corner card in the upper third holding a row of five stars with only the first filled in yellow and the rest in light grey, and beneath them a short review quote in heavy dark sans-serif, set in four centred lines inside curly quotation marks. Below the card keep the product as a clean cutout, large and centred, filling the lower two thirds of the frame, lit evenly with no props or background scene. Replace the product with {YOUR PRODUCT}. Set the quote to "{THE REAL ONE-LINE BACKHANDED COMPLIMENT}".
